Fun Fall, Y'all! Fright Fest at Six Flags over Georgia

We got a sneak peek at the 2015 Six Flags Fright Fest this past weekend, and it's awesome!

The scary surprises start as soon as you arrive at the front gate. Step inside the park and you'll find caskets, wagons filled with creepy cargo, and more.  Spider webs drape the buildings on the promenade, as well.  The haunting music that plays throughout the park will definitely get you in the mood for Fright Fest!

Creepy spots like this are found throughout the park!

Hungry vultures were everywhere!  They had lots to "feast" on....

Daytime thrills include family-friendly activities such as the Lickskillet Harvest Festival.  It is a fun place to take pics with a silly scarecrow, play on the playground and paint your own pumpkin to take home with you! Offered Friday from 6 – 10 pm and Saturday and Sunday 12 – 6 pm.

My pumpkin!

Bugs Bunny Spooky Town has no tricks, only treats - hang out with your favorite Looney Tunes friends, and enter the Costume Contest at the Bugs Bunny World Theater! It's at 7 pm on Friday, and 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday.  (Only kids 12 and under are allowed to wear costumes in the park, according to the Six Flags website.)

Spooky Stories - Bugs Bunny World Theater – Fun, scary stories are told Friday at 8, 9 and 10 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 1, 2, 3 and 5 pm.

McBoogles –Hanson Cars – Read about the adventures of the McBoogle family as you take a leisurely drive on the Hanson Cars.  Friday 6 – close, Saturday and Sunday 12 – close.

Things get much scarier for Fright by Night after dark!

Check out The Mourning, a village where the Dead walk and vultures feast.....

Beware the Lost Souls who like to travel in the fog of night, between the Mourning funeral and their graves in the Southern Cemetery.

Cross through The Battleground, where the undead have no love for the living and the battle for Fright Fest has begun!

Travel back in time to 1692 and venture through the village of Salem, where chaos has ensued with the Salem Witch Hunt.

In the Dark Harvest, you'll need to be wary of the corn fields, filled with scarecrows waiting for their prey....

In Big Top Terror there is a wicked Ringmaster who draws onlookers in with his hypnotic voice and wicked gaze!

Gotham City is where you'll find the end of days is near.  A deadly infection is rapidly wiping out mankind....

In Subterrestrial, watch out or you may become the newest creature to live below with the sewer monsters!

There are also Haunted Attractions (extra fee required):

Dr. Fright's Frightorium 3-D – Big Top Terror

ZX-1 – Gotham City

Terror Train – Southern Cemetery

Bayou Bloodlust – Thunder River

The Last Ride – Lickskillet Mill

Monstertainment:

Fright-Faced Photo Opp near Monster Mansion

The Uprising – outside the Crystal Palace Music Hall

Dr. Fright's Dead Man's Party – Crystal Palace Music Hall

Bad Bob the Bone Butcher – Lickskillet Stage

Big Top Sideshow – Dare Devil Dive Stage

Eve L.'s Spells – Southern Cemetery

Salem Witch Trials – Lickskillet

Miss Dixie's Awakening – Southern Cemetery

In addition to all of the Fright Fest thrills and scares, there are also tons of great rides for your family to enjoy while you are there.  My favorite is always the Harley Quinn Spinsanity!! As someone who doesn't like heights or rollercoasters, people can't believe how much I love spinning crazily in circles over and over, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  My friend Lisa's son Jeramy rode this with me three times in a row, til we could hardly walk straight!

If you like roller coasters, you will be in heaven at Six Flags over Georgia.  They have so many – the Joker Chaos Coaster, The Mind Bender, The Great American Scream Machine, The Georgia Cyclone, The Georgia Scorcher and several more!

Just know that after dark things will get scary - so if you have littles, plan to go early when things are family-friendly, and leave by dinner time. If you have teens, they will probably like the after dark fun best, especially if they like to get scared!

All in all, Six Flags Fright Fest will be a great Fall fun destination for the whole family.  Check their website for hours, directions, and ticket prices!  Six Flags is located at 275 Riverside Parkway, SW, Austell, Georgia 30168.  Click here for directions.

How to FAIL at Pinterest!

So I have been obsessed with Pinterest this summer/fall - planning a bridal shower, getting wedding ideas, recipes, homeschool ideas, and party ideas.  My friend Renea hosted a fabulous Halloween party for our boys a few weeks ago and I wanted to bring a few things too - some cookies, a cheeseball, and some favors.   I just had to show you this big fat pinterest FAIL!

I found these finger cookies all over pinterest.  Everywhere! So I rolled out my dough, let it chill, and then got busy forming the coolest fingers EVER. Popped that cookie sheet in the oven and about cried when I took them out.  Duh - they are going to spread, I just didn't think about it, lol! So the next batch was a sheet full of teeny tiny kiddie-sized fingers.  Yeah, still spread and looked like blobs.  I called them ogre fingers and called it quits!  (Click on the image above to see it full-sized in a pop-up, it just wouldn't fit in the blog layout any bigger)

I think next year I will try with a shortbread dough, since that usually doesn't spread out as much. These were yummy, but disappointing in appearance.  I got out my Trader Joe's chocolate, coffee and sugar grinder to sprinkle these with "graveyard dust", in case you were wondering what the black specks are! :)

Stay tuned for the details of our super-fun, a little spooky Halloween party....

Halloween Party Food!

So it's time to share last year's get together with our great friends The Adams.  I've known Steph since December 1984, when we moved to my new high school in the middle of my junior year.  We became fast friends, attended the same college for a year together, and remained friends throughout the years.  Now she is married with a teenage daughter and we try to get together a couple times a year. (In fact, they are the ones who invited us along on the trip to Orlando the day after Christmas last year!)

Last year was our 2nd annual Halloween get together.  We do snacks, dinner and desserts, while catching up and watching scary movies.  Paranormal Activity, Mirrors, etc....  plus lots of candy, trick or treating and kids running in and out throughout the night!

So here are the pics....I can't believe I didn't get a wide shot of the food table!!

I know my Grandmother would not like knowing her candelabra holding my "bloody dripping candles"!  I simply bought a red candlestick, lit it, then let the red wax drip onto these white candlesticks (over a paper plate to catch drips).  The candelabra is one of my favorite things from Grandmother.  My sister has the other one - they sat on Grandmother's buffet and when we were little girls visiting Papa & Grandmother in Orlando, we'd always swing the crystals and listen to them clink together!!

My coffee table served as the apps table.  We had a shrimp cocktail platter, plus fruit and veggie platters.  I made a 7 layer Mexican dip and the green goddess dressing was squirted on in circles, then added the web design over them!

My puking pumpkin.  He's puking my turkey bacon cheeseburger filling as the dip.  I served this with small rolls to make mini sandwiches.

This pumpkin is filled with "pumpkin poop" - they are just sprinkled donut holes from Dunkin Donuts!

Jack o'lantern pizza using sharp cheddar shapes.  I'll use larger pieces of cheese next time!

More of my food table - the sticks with eyeballs are drink stirrers,  the eyeballs in the bowl are to float in drinks or just eat - they were gummy. I had extra black plastic tumblers to hold my black cutlery.    The sign in the back was from Dollar Tree.  I used a water & metallic bronze paint "wash" it to give it a more weathered look. (originally stark white!)

My zombie girl

So sad - this was the only pic I got of my soldier boy - and he literally bounced out of the frame - too much sugar!
The Aftermath of our appetizer table!
One of my hurricanes filled with candy corns and creepy spiders from Pier One!
Fall Mantle, 2010
oops- here is another food picture....
Apple nachos - sliced apples topped with melted marshmallow fluff, drizzled with caramel sauce, then topped with chocolate chips and sprinkles!

I hope you enjoyed this peek at last year's party/dinner.  I didn't do as much with the food as the year before, but we sure had a great night with great friends!  Can't wait til this year's event - I'm still planning the menu but it's coming together nicely!  What's your Halloween specialty? Do you host a party or go to someone else's? Leave me a comment, or better yet, a link to your ideas! : )

How to make Spooky Halloween Jars

Just wanted to put up a link to one of my favorite Halloween decorations from last year - click over for the directions & details!

I just got the empty jars out of the attic, filled them up with colored water and put them up on one of my shelves - instant spookiness for my house this year, too!  Dollar Tree has the "severed fingers" and other items you could make this with, and Michael's has the "skulls" out again too! : )  I love silly, spooky decor like this - especially when I can make it for very little money!

What are some of your favorite Halloween decorations that you put out each year?

How to save money year-round for holidays...

Over the last few years, money has become tighter and tighter, so I've had to get really creative to stretch what we have.  One thing I have gotten especially good at is finding deals for holidays.

My first tip - go to your favorite store the morning after a holiday.  Be there when they open if you can so you get the best selection! Most stores mark everything 50% off the day after!  Last year the kids and I were at Target & Walmart the morning after Halloween, and we made out like bandits!  I bought both kids costumes for this year ~ K will be a flapper and D will be a magician.  I got both costumes for the price of one!  I also got a crazy lightup tee-shirt for D on clearance, as well as cupcake liners, tableware, decorative items, and so much more.  We are set for this years Halloween party!

Same idea for Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, etc!  We were on vacation last year in Florida the day after Christmas, but yes, I did go to Target and Walmart!  I would have been so mad at myself this November when I'd have to pay full price for Christmas stuff. So we went, we shopped, and we drove back to Atlanta with a big boxful of decorations, wrapping paper, candles, hand towels, Christmas cards and more.  Oh, and don't forget to check the baking section - the holiday sprinkles and cupcake liners, etc are usually on sale too!

Just a few of the things I got for  1/2 price at Walmart, Target & CVS after Christmas in Florida last year!

One more after Christmas tip ~ You can buy Christmas candy like M&M's or jelly beans & gumdrops.  Save them in your pantry or fridge to use the red ones for Valentine's day treats and the green ones for St. Patricks Day!

If your Walmart recently brought fabric back in ~ check the fabric department the day after holidays - you can get holiday prints 1/2 off! I buy fabric for table runners, gift bags, etc.  Easy way to decorate frugally!

Check daily deal sites like Groupon, Half Off Depot. etc for deals at holiday attractions, restaurants and more.  I've already seen Haunted House Deals locally!

In Atlanta, the newspaper usually has a coupon on Thanksgiving Day for the Christmas light display at Lake Lanier that is good for 1/2 off the admission fee for Thanksgiving night.  That's a great deal!  Check local newspapers, or call local attractions to find out if they offer any specials, previews, etc.

Participate in local rewards programs: I'm in one for a local radio station that gives me points by email once a week to use in various contests - last year I won a gift certificate that paid for a nice gift for each of our kids at a local store.  The rewards program for a local tv station gives code words that I enter on their website.  Because of that program, we won 4 tickets to see Peter Pan when it was here in the Spring, plus we got to get a behind the scenes meet & greet with some of the actors, see the stage, see some of the puppets and props, etc - it was a total treat for us!

Use Michael's & Hobby Lobby coupons for seasonal decor, gifts, and more.  Most every week there is a 40% off coupon in the paper or online - use it on something for your home or buy a gift for someone on your list and hide it away til Christmas! I try to do this all year long so I'll have several gifts for the kids by the time Christmas rolls around. Also check here for after-holiday clearance...In my Fall decor boxes that just came from the attic, I had some beautiful berry garlands that I got after Halloween last year for 70% off - I think they were $2 each!  I can afford to buy more pretty things when they are highly discounted!

I like to check the dollar store before a big holiday: around the beginning of September for Halloween items,  beginning of January for Valentines, etc.  They tend to sell out of the cute stuff early.  (especially paper goods - if you need napkins and plates, cups and tableclothes)  And don't forget Goodwill and thrift stores...mine has a whole aisle of holiday decor all year round! I've gotten some cute Christmas & Halloween items there.

Use pharmacy deals to decorate for the holidays. I love when Target has their $10 gift card promo going on because I'll transfer one of my DH's prescriptions to Target, then get a $10 gift card for filling it there. I'm gonna have to fill it anyway, might as well get paid for it, right?!   I have gotten some really cute spring and fall merchandise using those cards! Kroger does this as well - but they will give you a $25 credit on your Kroger Plus card.  They always have an aisle or two of decor and gift items for every holiday, so spend it well!

Kohl's Cash is great for decorating your home for the holidays too!  I love to buy clothes for the kids there(during special sales you spend $50, get $10 Kohl's cash back) and save my Kohl's cash for a little spree!  My favorite thing to get with Kohl's cash is their birthday candles (the ones in a glass jar with sprinkles on top) for my friends and family.  Recently I've also started buying fun decor there too. Last month I used my Kohl's cash for a harvest candle and a box of faux acorns (vase filler) for my Fall decorating.  I don't like to spend "real money" decorating my house,  but I don't mind spending store rewards or gift cards!

I hope these ideas will help you with some of the upcoming holiday sales (or after sales, I should say!)

Here are some pics to show what I've gotten over the last two years after Halloween...(actually just some of it, I've already started decorating, so alot has been put out!)   I'll shop the day after again this year to add to my stash - need to start working on some outdoor decorations next!

Looks messy, but this bin has stretchy mice, a black wreath form, funky scarecrow, napkins, plates, serving bowls, votive holders, platters, a cheesecloth "curtain" for my french door in the family room, and spider webs with creepy crawlies.  Plus David's magician costume-in-a-bag!

This has more decorative items - dollar store Ghost Motel & Witches Way signs, 1/2 price shirt, black light lamp, hair glitter, bat cookie cutter, tree, candles, and labels for jars/drinks. The cute little vintage bucket on the back right side (checked interior, vintage label on front) was 1/2 off at World Market! I printed out the subway art last year and put in a dollar store frame...

and a few more - 1/2 off cupcake liners & picks, 1/2 off scarecrow & snow globe (w/ scarecrow) from CVS last year, 1/2 off fabrics from Walmart, wooden black cat with ribbon was $1.91 at Goodwill, the skulls were 1/2 off from Michals, and the bronze pumpkin was a white one from the dollar store I painted. Plus white tulle for making ghosties! (use 40% off coupon at HobLob to get it so cheap!)

So I need to fluff the leaves more, I know - but this cute Welcome Friends birdhouse was $3.50 at CVS after Thanksgiving.  The bird is from the dollar store.   The hurricane is one of my Goodwill creations - a vase glued to a glass candlestick holder - filled with large balls from a fancy-schmancy bag of potpourri I got at Michael's with a 40% off coupon....

Love this look - the hurricane is from Pier 1 ~  I believe it was $9.99 & I had a $10 gift certificate from their Facebook page.  The acorns (bottom) were $12 from Kohl's - FREE w/ Kohl's Cash.  The smaller balls on top are from the same bag of potpourri mentioned above.  The candle was $9.99 at Kohls, but free with my Kohl's cash! It has a twine tie with a metal pumpkin charm on the front.  The garland is the one I got for 70% off at Michael's.  I just love all these elements together - the textures, the scent (the candle is Harvest Spice fragrance - yummm!) they work so well together.

You can really get some great things for cheap (or free!) just by shopping after the holidays for the next year, and utilizing sales, coupons & store rewards.

Setting up for a spooky weekend...

Oh my gosh, do I ever feel like a chicken with its head cut off!! The weekend is almost here, and I'm starting to FrEaK out because I have so much left to do!! I am really bad about procrastinating, and I went and did it AGAIN!!! Anyone else have that problem!? : )

So my list of things to do is going here. Maybe I will actually get it all done if I post it publicly?! We have a soccer game tonight, I work in David's class tomorrow for their Fall Festival, and Saturday morning our favorite small-town library is having a quick Halloween party, so dropping in for that. SOLD OUT! We may go to the bookstore while I run errands - they are having a Halloween party I think.

The rest of the next 3 days I'll be cleaning, baking, cooking and decorating for our annual get together with dear friends - get ready for this - the Adams Family!! Steph and I went to high school and one year of college together, and we have managed to stay friends for a long, long time. This is our second year of a Halloween dinner/movie/trick or treat night. The kids go out with the dads, Steph & I catch up and put the food out, then we all eat together and enjoy a scary movie, great food and wonderful fellowship!! Last year my recipes and foods were kind of scary/gross, but I have decided to really pare down my menu because I'm really not sure I will get all this done! lol It's going to be easy to make food that will be tasty, and a little scary. I still have a few ideas for some other foods, but I'll have to wait and see

Clean ~ foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, shampoo carpet in living room, dining room
Have kids clean - all the baseboards, Katie's (guest) bathroom, put clothes and school things in their rooms, Katie's room, David's room
Bake: pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, devils food cupcakes, Turkey Bacon Cheeseburgers with rolls
Cook: frozen pizzas with cheese jack o lantern faces
Assemble: layered mexican dip with green goddess spiderweb on top, apple nachos, chocolate dipped oreos, frozen juice hand for punchbowl (ended up not making punch, so didn't need this)
Wash: Grandmother's candleabra for my bloody-dripping candlesticks, & punchbowl & glasses for juice (didn't end up using)
finish faux painting last kitchen countertop
paint as much of the kitchen walls as I can get done! didn't do this - ran out of time!
cut out and hang black paper bats
LAUNDRY monster downstairs must be tamed!
DH's Honey-do list written & delivered to himlol
Holy moly - I'm never gonna get this all done!!

What are your Halloween plans? What are you & your kiddos going to be for Halloween? I'm not dressing up, but the kids are: David will either be a ninja or an army man, and Katie is going to be a silly 16 year old Dora the Explorer. Teenagers *shakes head*!!!

And the million dollar question ~ what kind of candy do you give out? Usually we have one or two good kinds and the rest is smarties or lollipops. This year we have a huge assortment. Fun size Hershey bars, Kit Kats, Butterfingers, Reeses cups, Reeses Fast Break, Smarties, Lollipops, Sweet Tarts, Nerds, and Tootsie Rolls, plus boxes of stickers, and some spider rings. Thanks to awesome sales at CVS & Kroger, and good coupons, I was able to get all this great candy for under $12, so I hope we have lots of trick or treaters this year! : )

Ok, sorry for the rambling. I'm so tired and feeling overwhelmed, but putting it all down in a list makes it easier to cross each item off as I go! Y'all have an excellent evening, and I'll try to have some good stuff on here tomorrow!

How I stock my Spooky Halloween Pantry...

With some gross preserved things, of course!

Here's what you will find in my Spooky Halloween Pantry:

Preserved Brittle Bones
Brains in Skulls
Pickled Finger Food

Here are the details for these super easy "treats"!

I saved jelly, mason & pasta jars with lids for these. I got a bag of bony skeleton hands, a bag of "severed" fingers, and a plastic skeleton at the dollar store. The fingers went in a jelly jar with water and several drops of red food color dye. The hands went in the pasta jar, and I cut up some of the longer bones from the skeleton and added them in. Then some water and lime green dye to finish it off. Finally, I found a bag of skulls at Michael's for $1.99 ~ they went in a large mason jar with water & teal food dye! (I need to get one more bag - these all float up to the top!)

Our dollar store is sold out of all of the things I bought there, but Michael's still has the severed fingers for $4.00 and the skulls. Next year, I'm hitting the dollar store EARLY for more!!

I made the labels on my computer, cut them with my scrapbooking scissors (deckle edge, I believe), and colored them a bit with David's pastels to add some interest. I had a funky, fall colored tie dye print fabric so that went on top. I'm not sure where they will end up in the house, but for now they are on my Ikea cube book shelf in the living room - but they look rather lost with all those cubes!!

Are you decorated for Halloween yet? What's your favorite decoration this year? I think this little grouping just may be my favorite!

Halloween party 2009

Last year we had a get-together with another family for Halloween. (It technically wasn't a party - there were only 7 of us!) It was so much fun, and the food and decorations were cute & gross at the same time! lol

Here are some of my favorites!

This little guy is fondly known as the puking pumpkin....nice! That was a yummy cheese & sausage dip our friends brought. Pumpkin was done by moi! Behind him you'll see the marshmallow ghosts topped with chocolate, and some sour gummy worms.

Mmmmm...bloody eyeballs on toast! Gross to look at but delicious to eat - cream cheese, mixed with Italian dressing mix, topped with lovely olive pupils! We had eyeball stirrers for our punch, and a pumpkin bundt cake. (not my best cake!lol)

For the grownups during our scary movie - fruit, cheese, crackers, & a veggie tray with dip!

These little cookie & swiss roll graves were delicious!! There were candy necklaces for the three kids to string, too...

And to fit with the gross theme, this dip, which is usually a mixture of pineapple preserves, horseradish and dry mustard, then served over a block of cream cheese, was blended together. Instead of my Jezebel sauce, it became Jezebel's vomit dip. Nice & classy, right? It tasted good though!!

So now I am planning a similar get-together for this year. I will still have the puking pumpkin, and I am making some cupcakes that will have icing piped on to look like mummy wrapping. The rest of the menu is up in the air! I have been looking at the Top ten Halloween recipes at Taste of Home magazine, where I am a new Field Editor. They have some great ideas! I think I bought half the Halloween department at Walmart the day after Halloween last year!! (Gotta love those 50% off sales!) So this year I have more serving dishes, plates, napkins, and other Halloween decor to use for this get together!

Do you have any fun or unique Halloween recipes? I'd love to see your pictures and recipes of Halloween treats!

Halloween Centerpiece from Dollar Tree/Goodwill/Thrift store finds!

So tonight I finally got one Halloween project totally done. You've already seen my Halloween tree...

I needed something to add to it, so I grabbed that really unattractive oval plastic Christmas platter I scored at Goodwill a few weeks ago.

First it got a coat of the oil rubbed bronze spray paint, then a few splatter-y sprays of satin nickel to add more shine. I put the Halloween tree in the middle, added some spider-web stuff, some more of the metal ornaments and a couple creepy spiders. I think it looks really cute! Of course, my Katie piped in that it doesn't match the table cloth, but OH WELL!

PS ~ See the jar of creepy skeletal hands on the side? That is another project in progress. A crafty mom's work is never done!! I'll share that project soon!

My Halloween Tree

Sorry for missing my entry for yesterday. So far I'm not doing so well in the "post every day in Sept." challenge I signed up for!! But this one was not my fault!! Tuesday night we lost our internet, and it just came back up this afternoon!

So here is my first post for tonight, and another will soon follow.

I am getting my Halloween decorations out and ready to use, so I was kind of stumped by the bag of small metal ornaments I picked up at a thrift store. They are very lightweight, and so cute. But what to do with them? A wreath? A garland? Wait....is that my Easter box in the attic? And is there an Easter tree in there? Where's my can of spray paint?!

So five minutes later....

and once it was dry, I decorated it with the ornaments and some pieces of trick or treat ribbon.

So now I'm imagining all the other things I can come up using these cute trees from Dollar Tree:

Valentine's Day tree, painted white and decorated with hearts and ribbon
Easter tree (duh!)
April Fool's Day - something whacked out - just ask my kids how much I LOVE this day!
Mother's Day tree with ornaments of mom's fave things
Father's Day tree with ornaments of his favorite things
4th of July tree with stars and ribbons
Birthday tree for each kiddo with ornaments of favorites )or maybe with little tiny gifts?)
Back to school tree - with little erasers, apple ornamets, etc
Happy Fall Tree with leaves, acorns, etc
Halloween tree - (duh!! )
Thanksgiving tree with strips of paper naming things or people we are thankful for
Christmas tree (duh!!)
Happy New Year tree with ribbon, confetti, tiny champagne glasses, black top hats

Whew! Did I miss any holidays or events? Please leave your ideas in the comments - we could definitely start a huge new trend with these little trees ~ lol!

I will need to get 2 more of the trees - one I'll paint white, and one gold. I can't wait to get started with these next spring when they are back in the stores in time for Easter!

Do y'all decorate trees for holidays besides Christmas?
